In your quest to grow your account by manipulating & keeping up with Instagram’s ever-changing algorithm, plus with the upcoming removal of Instagram “Likes,” you may have heard of some hacks that will increase your engagement & reach beyond likes & comments. They’re out there, they work, & I’m sharing them here today so make sure your account is set to public & let’s meet the algorithm head on!
Saving Posts to Collections
Private saves are where it’s at, & many brands are aware of this, creating “saveable” content for their followers. These may include infographics, life hacks, recipes, workout videos, checklists, educational/informational posts, quotes etc. that users can add to a Collection they’ve created. The key idea is to create posts & encourage your followers to save them for later reference to check again & again. Relevance is key, so an extra tip is to create posts that will stand the tests of time. The more saves you get on a post, the more the algorithm will catch, bumping it up in the ranks.
Post at Peak Traffic Times
A quick classic tip that we sometimes forget – posting when your followers are online. It’s highly doubtful that you’re going to great interaction or engagement from a random late night posting, so stick to when your audience is online. Of course this will vary according to time zones, but think of when you’re on social media during your day… In bed in the morning or at night, once settled in at work, lunchtime & unwinding in the evening.
There have been so many studies done on this & a simple, quick lookup on your favorite search engine can get you the answers you’re looking for. Just type in, “the best time to post on…” & add the platform you’re curious about. If you are using social tools such as Buffer, Hootsuite, Later etc. they’ve done the work for you so take advantage of their auto-scheduling features.
Instagram Carousel Posts
Currently you are allowed to post up to 10 photos &/or videos in one post, so try it out because the more time a viewer spends engaging with post, the higher up it goes into the algorithm. If you’ve been on Instagram recently, you may have noticed a carousel post that you passed up has popped up again on your screen, with an alternate image/video from that post. This is Instagram giving you a second chance to engage with a post that it believes you would have interest in. Try this out with your posts to give your followers more to soak up, as well as another opportunity to engage with a post from you that they may have missed the first time around.
Keep the Stories Coming
Allegedly Instagram Stories have no effect on the algorithm but they recently passed the 500 million daily user mark & are insanely popular with brands & users. What you want to keep in mind here is that Stories keep you visible, as they keep you front & center in your followers feed. They more you pop up, the more likely it is that your followers will watch & visit your profile.
Tips for your stories:
•Tag associated accounts (this allows those accounts to share your story to theirs)
•Add a location (geotag) such as an event, city or venue which increases your chances of getting on the explore page/location’s public story
•Hashtags – up to 10 are allowed in a story through text, so get them in! If you don’t want them seen, you can hide them behind stickers, change the color to blend in with the background or shrink them down (just don’t go un-readably small or they will be discarded & have no effect)
•Link to IGTV Videos or if you’ve passed the 10k follower mark, outside destination links
Since Stories take up the entire screen, take advantage & start creating up to 15 second stories. Even though it seems that there is no limit to how many stories you can add, the highest completion rate for an average viewer is 2-10 frames. When a viewers sees beyond that, the chances of investing their time in watching begin to go down. If they do go beyond that, they must really love you! Test it out for yourself though, if you get to the 20 frame mark & the views are still coming in, you have something good going on! Get creative & be sure to utilize Story Stickers such as Polls, Like Meters, Gifs, Questions & more!
Pro tip: If only posting a photo to your story, use an app such as Splice to turn it into a video! 4-7 seconds is recommended for optimal viewing without tapping through.
